The freedom of lifestyle attracted me to Amsterdam. As a 37-year-old Lithuanian gay man, I believed this country will give me what my little heart desires.
For 11 years I was living in the quite conservative Middle East, in Dubai. Once I realised that I wanted my personal life to be recognised and legal I left Dubai for Toronto, Canada. This is where I met my boyfriend. We agreed that I would come to Amsterdam to experiment what it was like to live here. All going well, my boyfriend would then join me and continue to our lives here in this city. Within weeks I found a beautiful home in Oost and a job managing a boutique hotel called Amstelzicht.
Holland has given me the opportunity to travel. It’s so centrally located that everywhere is accessible.
I love it here, it’s extremely balanced. I have never felt happier since arriving. I’m not shy anymore when it comes to telling people that I am gay. Now I am free. This city gave me the chance to relax and be myself. You have a right to choose to show who you are here, and it’s respected.
