I was sleeping on a couch, thanks to a kind hearted stranger, as an 18-year-old who had never lived outside of the family home, it was a bit terrifying. Finding a place to study and a home all whilst living out of a bag was my introduction to Amsterdam life. It was definitely an interesting start to my adventure. I was accepted into the European School of Physiotherapy. With the help of some friends and Facebook groups I moved to the De Bijlmer area, and I love it here. It’s another city inside the city that’s steeped in culture; affordable for students; has great markets; is close to the city and the vibe is cool.
Since moving here, I’ve adapted so much. Coming from an Irish culture where we sugar coat things, it was a shock to the system when dealing with the Dutch and their directness. I have to say, I love it now, and the Dutch openness. It’s become a part of my character.
For any student moving to Amsterdam, I would say; don’t be afraid to live outside the city center, everything is accessible and you get to experience another culture. As well as doing some DJ gigs and one shift a week at Apollo Gym, I work for UberEATS. I have to say they are a great company to work for. As a student it’s perfect; you’re in charge of your own time.
