The quality of life here cannot be beaten. In America, you work all the time. Here, after 5 o’clock if somebody emails you, they don’t really expect a response until the next day. And if you are on holiday, you are on holiday: no one expects you to check in at work. It is so nice and such a healthy balance!
Before we moved to Amsterdam I knew nothing about the Netherlands, but it turned out it was my husband’s life-long dream to live in Europe, so when he was offered an opportunity to move with work we grabbed the chance. My husband started working immediately after we landed but my profession is quite specialized, managing museum collections, with particular focus on birds. Before I left the States, I sent letters and emails with my resume to Zoological Museum Amsterdam. When I didn’t hear anything back I decided to call them when I arrived here. The curator remembered me from my resume, he said, “Where are you, I’ve been waiting for you?”, I was so happy! I had persevered and began as a volunteer, and when the museum merged into Naturalis in Leiden a few months later I got offered a full-time position. Seven years later we are still here and love what we do.
